Il dipartimento ha 150 unità di personale strutturato, 60% docente (90 tra professori ordinari e associati e ricercatori a tempo determinato e indeterminato) e 40% tecnico-amministrativo. Sono inoltre presenti annualmente 130 ricercatori temporanei, tra i quali 40 dottorandi sui vari programmi nei 3 anni, 25 assegnisti di ricerca (post doc), 25 contrattisti (cococo) e 40 borsisti.

Il dipartimento svolge ricerca di base e applicata nei settori sottoelencati.

Il budget annuale del dipartimento è pari a 3 M€, per metà finanziato da aziende (contratti conto terzi) e per l'altra metà da progetti europei, nazionali (PRIN), regionali e finanziati da altri enti pubblici (es. enti locali) e privati (es. fondazioni bancarie).

In parallelo all'attività di ricerca, sui medesimi temi, eroga corsi di istruzione superiore di primo secondo e terzo livello (laurea, laurea magistrale, master e dottorato) con circa 3.000 studenti sui corsi di studio interessati.
